Madinan · 22 ayat · 105th in order of revelation
بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
قَدۡ سَمِعَ ٱللَّهُ قَوۡلَ ٱلَّتِي تُجَٰدِلُكَ فِي زَوۡجِهَا وَتَشۡتَكِيٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ يَسۡمَعُ تَحَاوُرَكُمَآۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِيعُۢ بَصِيرٌ
Allah, indeed, has heard the contention of she who is arguing with you [O Muhammad] concerning her husband and her complaining unto Allah, for Allah has been listening in on what both of you were discussing: surely, Allah is all-hearing, all-seeing.
ٱلَّذِينَ يُظَٰهِرُونَ مِنكُم مِّن نِّسَآئِهِم مَّا هُنَّ أُمَّهَٰتِهِمۡۖ إِنۡ أُمَّهَٰتُهُمۡ إِلَّا ٱلَّٰٓـِٔي وَلَدۡنَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَيَقُولُونَ مُنكَرٗا مِّنَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ وَزُورٗاۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَعَفُوٌّ غَفُورٞ
As for those from among you who sexually forsake their wives [by saying to them, “I consider you now, as far as sex is concerned, like my mother,” let them know that] they can never be [as] their mothers; none are their mothers except for the ones who gave them birth: and, so, surely, they but pronounce a repugnant assertion, and one that is erroneous. But, behold, Allah is much prone to exoneration and clemency:
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُظَٰهِرُونَ مِن نِّسَآئِهِمۡ ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا قَالُواْ فَتَحۡرِيرُ رَقَبَةٖ مِّن قَبۡلِ أَن يَتَمَآسَّاۚ ذَٰلِكُمۡ تُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِيرٞ
Hence, those who sexually ditch their wives by saying to them that they are the same as their mothers [and thus sexually not approachable], and thereafter retract what they said, [their atonement] shall be the freeing of a person in captivity before the couple may resume intimate contact. This, you are hereby counseled [to do] — for Allah is sensibly knowledgeable of what you do.
فَمَن لَّمۡ يَجِدۡ فَصِيَامُ شَهۡرَيۡنِ مُتَتَابِعَيۡنِ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن يَتَمَآسَّاۖ فَمَن لَّمۡ يَسۡتَطِعۡ فَإِطۡعَامُ سِتِّينَ مِسۡكِينٗاۚ ذَٰلِكَ لِتُؤۡمِنُواْ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦۚ وَتِلۡكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِۗ وَلِلۡكَٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
However, he who does not have the means [to free a person in bondage] shall fast [as an alternative] for two consecutive months before the couple may resume intimate contact; and he who is unable [to do that] shall feed sixty disadvantaged ones in need: this, so that you may uphold your commitment to Allah and His Apostle. And [know that] these are the constraints set by Allah; and awaiting the God-deniers is a grievous affliction.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُحَآدُّونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ كُبِتُواْ كَمَا كُبِتَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ وَقَدۡ أَنزَلۡنَآ ءَايَٰتِۭ بَيِّنَٰتٖۚ وَلِلۡكَٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٞ مُّهِينٞ
Verily those who are acutely antagonistic to Allah and His Apostle shall be put down even as those [evildoers] who preceded them were put down while they were receiving clear demonstrations [of Our power and authority] from on high. And for the God-deniers there shall be a painful affliction
يَوۡمَ يَبۡعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ جَمِيعٗا فَيُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوٓاْۚ أَحۡصَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ وَنَسُوهُۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ شَهِيدٌ
On a Day when Allah will resurrect them all and tell them [the facts of] what they were doing [while they lived their earthly lives]: Allah will have kept accurate records of it [everything they did] even though they will have forgotten it — for Allah is a keen observer of everything.
أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعۡلَمُ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ مَا يَكُونُ مِن نَّجۡوَىٰ ثَلَٰثَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ رَابِعُهُمۡ وَلَا خَمۡسَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ سَادِسُهُمۡ وَلَآ أَدۡنَىٰ مِن ذَٰلِكَ وَلَآ أَكۡثَرَ إِلَّا هُوَ مَعَهُمۡ أَيۡنَ مَا كَانُواْۖ ثُمَّ يُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُواْ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَيۡءٍ عَلِيمٌ
Are you not consciously intuitive that Allah knows about everything that is in the heavens and everything that is on earth? Never can there be a secret meeting of three except that He is their fourth, nor among five except that He is their sixth, and neither can there be more or less than that except that He is [there] with them wherever they may be. Then [in the end] He will, on the Day of Resurrection, divulge to them [exactly] what they did: for, surely, Allah is well aware of everything [that happened].
أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ نُهُواْ عَنِ ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا نُهُواْ عَنۡهُ وَيَتَنَٰجَوۡنَ بِٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡعُدۡوَٰنِ وَمَعۡصِيَتِ ٱلرَّسُولِۖ وَإِذَا جَآءُوكَ حَيَّوۡكَ بِمَا لَمۡ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ ٱللَّهُ وَيَقُولُونَ فِيٓ أَنفُسِهِمۡ لَوۡلَا يُعَذِّبُنَا ٱللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُۚ حَسۡبُهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُ يَصۡلَوۡنَهَاۖ فَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ
Are you not consciously perceptive of those who were banned from having secret [conspiratorial] meetings, and yet [always] revert to what they were banned from, and continue to co-conspire with one another to do things that are fallacious and offensive and in disobedience to the Apostle? And when they approach you [O Muhammad] they greet you with greetings not permitted by Allah; and they say to themselves, “[If what we are saying to Muhammad is wrong] why does not Allah punish us for what we are saying [to the Prophet]?” Sufficient for them is a hell within which they will crackle — and what a pathetic fate!
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِذَا تَنَٰجَيۡتُمۡ فَلَا تَتَنَٰجَوۡاْ بِٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡعُدۡوَٰنِ وَمَعۡصِيَتِ ٱلرَّسُولِ وَتَنَٰجَوۡاْ بِٱلۡبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقۡوَىٰۖ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِيٓ إِلَيۡهِ تُحۡشَرُونَ
[And thus], O you who are faithfully committed [to Allah’s power and authority]! If you convene confidential meetings, do not exchange secret information with a view to doing wrong and fomenting aggression and disobeying the Apostle; rather [when you do] convene such confidential meetings to discuss doing virtuous deeds and tasks [then do so with consideration of] Allah’s “power for justice”: and be actively on guard concerning Allah [His power and authority], the One unto whom all of you will be gathered [in the life to come].
إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ مِنَ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنِ لِيَحۡزُنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَلَيۡسَ بِضَآرِّهِمۡ شَيۡـًٔا إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ
Secret meetings [for purposes of aggression and violations of justice] are borne of the devil, so that he might unsettle the committed muslims; however, he [Satan] cannot do any harm to them [the committed muslims] save by Allah’s allowance. And in Allah, thenceforward, shall the committed muslims place their trust.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمۡ تَفَسَّحُواْ فِي ٱلۡمَجَٰلِسِ فَٱفۡسَحُواْ يَفۡسَحِ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡۖ وَإِذَا قِيلَ ٱنشُزُواْ فَٱنشُزُواْ يَرۡفَعِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مِنكُمۡ وَٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡعِلۡمَ دَرَجَٰتٖۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِيرٞ
O you who are committed to Allah [particularly to His power and authority]! When you are told, “Make room for one another in your social get-togethers,” do make room: [and in return], Allah will make room for you [in ways you may or may not understand]. And whenever you are told, “Rise up [unselfishly for a good deed],” do rise up: for Allah will elevate in ranks those of you who are committed [to Him] and those who are endowed with knowledge. And Allah is very well acquainted with what you do.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِذَا نَٰجَيۡتُمُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَقَدِّمُواْ بَيۡنَ يَدَيۡ نَجۡوَىٰكُمۡ صَدَقَةٗۚ ذَٰلِكَ خَيۡرٞ لَّكُمۡ وَأَطۡهَرُۚ فَإِن لَّمۡ تَجِدُواْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٌ
O you who are devotedly committed [to Allah]! Whenever you [intend to] consult the Apostle, offer up charitable aid on the occasion of your consultation: [doing] that will be for your betterment and an act of refinement [for your soul]. Yet if it is not within your means, [be assured that], verily, Allah is ever forgiving, ever merciful.
ءَأَشۡفَقۡتُمۡ أَن تُقَدِّمُواْ بَيۡنَ يَدَيۡ نَجۡوَىٰكُمۡ صَدَقَٰتٖۚ فَإِذۡ لَمۡ تَفۡعَلُواْ وَتَابَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ فَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَطِيعُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرُۢ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ
Are you nervous about advancing charitable assistance on the occasion of your consultation [with your Prophet, fearing a liability]? But if you fail to do it [for lack of wherewithal], and Allah pardons you [through His mercy], then you can [make amends by] building up your ṣalāh [potential] and regulating your zakāh [capacity] and obeying Allah and His Apostle: for Allah is very well acquainted with what you do.
۞ أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوۡاْ قَوۡمًا غَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِم مَّا هُم مِّنكُمۡ وَلَا مِنۡهُمۡ وَيَحۡلِفُونَ عَلَى ٱلۡكَذِبِ وَهُمۡ يَعۡلَمُونَ
Have you not considered [the reality of] those who enter into an alliance with people whom Allah is angry with? They do not belong to you [the committed muslims] nor to them [the God-deniers]: and [in this context] they swear [affirming their allegiance] fallaciously while they know [the erroneous belief they are acting on].
أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٗا شَدِيدًاۖ إِنَّهُمۡ سَآءَ مَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ
Allah has prepared for them a severe infliction. Indeed, contemptible is what they have been doing:
ٱتَّخَذُوٓاْ أَيۡمَٰنَهُمۡ جُنَّةٗ فَصَدُّواْ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٞ مُّهِينٞ
They have turned their oaths into a camouflage [to deflect from their treason], and thus they obstruct others from Allah’s course [of Islamic action]: hence, humiliating suffering is their [impending lot].
لَّن تُغۡنِيَ عَنۡهُمۡ أَمۡوَٰلُهُمۡ وَلَآ أَوۡلَٰدُهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ شَيۡـًٔاۚ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ
Neither their assets nor their esprit de corps will avail them against Allah: they are the attendees of the Fire in which they will dwell forever.
يَوۡمَ يَبۡعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ جَمِيعٗا فَيَحۡلِفُونَ لَهُۥ كَمَا يَحۡلِفُونَ لَكُمۡ وَيَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمۡ عَلَىٰ شَيۡءٍۚ أَلَآ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡكَٰذِبُونَ
On that Day, Allah will bring them all back to life [after their death] and then they will swear before Him as they [now, in this world] swear before you [the committed muslims], thinking they have merits [to their argument]. Oh, verily, it is indeed they who are the liars!
ٱسۡتَحۡوَذَ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ فَأَنسَىٰهُمۡ ذِكۡرَ ٱللَّهِۚ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ حِزۡبُ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنِۚ أَلَآ إِنَّ حِزۡبَ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنِ هُمُ ٱلۡخَٰسِرُونَ
Satan has taken control of them and as such he has caused them to stop thinking about Allah. They are the party of Satan: oh, verily, it is the party of Satan [whose members] are the losers!
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُحَآدُّونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ فِي ٱلۡأَذَلِّينَ
Surely those who are sharply hostile to Allah and His Apostle are [in fact] positioned among the most humiliated.
كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَأَغۡلِبَنَّ أَنَا۠ وَرُسُلِيٓۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٞ
Allah has ordained, “I shall most emphatically prevail, I and My apostles!” Surely, Allah is almighty, most cherished.
لَّا تَجِدُ قَوۡمٗا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأٓخِرِ يُوَآدُّونَ مَنۡ حَآدَّ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَلَوۡ كَانُوٓاْ ءَابَآءَهُمۡ أَوۡ أَبۡنَآءَهُمۡ أَوۡ إِخۡوَٰنَهُمۡ أَوۡ عَشِيرَتَهُمۡۚ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ كَتَبَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلۡإِيمَٰنَ وَأَيَّدَهُم بِرُوحٖ مِّنۡهُۖ وَيُدۡخِلُهُمۡ جَنَّٰتٖ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَاۚ رَضِيَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَرَضُواْ عَنۡهُۚ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ حِزۡبُ ٱللَّهِۚ أَلَآ إِنَّ حِزۡبَ ٱللَّهِ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ
You will not find a people who are committed to Allah and affirm the Last Day and [at the same time] are on friendly [ideological and political] terms with those who are acutely antagonistic to Allah and His Apostle — even if these [antagonists] are their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kinfolk. [As for such committed muslims], it is they in whose hearts He has inscribed responsible commitment, and whom He has supported with the rūḥ (life-force) from Himself, and whom [in the future] He will admit into gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, therein to live forever. Well pleased is Allah with them, and well pleased are they with Him. Those are the party of Allah: oh, surely, it is the party of Allah [whose members] shall be successful.
