84al-InshiqāqRipping Asunderسُورَةُ الإنشقاق

When the sky fractures,

And cedes to its Sustainer — as it should —

And when the earth is [leveled and] extended,

And ejects whatever is in it, and casts all aside,

And cedes to its Sustainer — as it should:

[Then] O social being [man]! [Know that] you have been [created to] endeavor [in life] on [a way] to your Sustainer! Quite an endeavor! Then you shall meet Him.

As for he who is presented his record of deeds in his responsible and honorable [hand],

He shall go through the accountability process easily,

And return to his [type of] folks joyfully.

But he who is presented his record of deeds from behind his back,

He shall cry out, “How devoid of good sense [was I in life]!” —

And he will suffer the pit of blazing fire.

Of course, [during his worldly life] he was happy among his [type of] people,

For, indeed, he thought he would never be restored [back to his original consciousness].

But of course [he would be restored]. Indeed, his Sustainer was always alert to him [and his deeds].

No [to all worldly and materialistic claims]! I avow by the afterglow of sunset,

And the night and what it engulfs,

And the Moon as it transitions to its fullness:

[Likewise, O social being] you shall move through life — stage by stage.

Why is it that they [the deniers] do not commit themselves [to Us]?

And [why is it that] when this Qur’an is read to them, they do not humble themselves [in prostration]?1

Rather, those who are in denial are bound to lie [about this affair].

But Allah knows best concerning their subconscious.

Break news to them! Theirs is a tormenting punishment —

Except for those who commit themselves [to Us] and do the good deeds: for them shall be compensation without end and without prejudice.
