88al-GhāshiyahThe Engrossing Eventسُورَةُ الغاشية

Has there come to you the narrative of the Engrossing Event?

[A number of] faces on that Day shall be deferential [humbled],

Preoccupied, exhausted,

About to endure a high-temperature fire,

[And] served drinks from a boiling fount.

They will have no food except for barbed and bitter thorns

That will neither nourish nor dispel hunger.

[Other] faces on that Day shall be genteel,

Well satisfied with their [earnest and conscientious] motivity,

In a lofty garden [of bliss],

[Wherein] they will hear no superficial talk;

In it [this garden] is a spring of flowing water,

[And] in it there are elevated [and prestigious] accommodations,

And cups that are at hand [and on tap],

And cushions that are aligned,

And carpets [and broadlooms] spread out.

Can they [who deny Our power and authority] not take a close look at their [own] camel — how it was created?

And at the sky — how it was actuated?

And at the mountains — how they were fixated?

And at the earth — how it was surfaced?

And so, [O Prophet], conscientize them — for you are a man of conscience,

Not a dictator over them.

However, as for he who turns away [from allegiance to you] and denies [Allah’s power and authority],

Him shall Allah cause to endure the greatest suffering:

[For], truly, to Us shall be their return,

And, of course, it is We who shall hold them accountable.
